Golden Globe Nominees Announced

16/12/2011

Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced its nominees for 2012 Golden Globe Awards. Jolies’s “In the Land of Blood and Honey” and Almodovar’s “The Skin I Live In” are the two entries in the “Foreign Film” category that are more likely to receive the award. Both films are distributed in Ukraine by “Aurora Group”.

Golden Globe’s stakes are always high as the ceremony is the informal rehearsal of the Academy Award, popularly known as the Oscars. There is a consistent pattern of Golden Globe’s winners to receive an Oscar.

“The Skin I Live In” is Pedro Almodovar’s comedy disguised as thriller. The director tried to confuse the audience’s expectations by positioning the film as horror but the result was Almodovar’s trademark extravaganza. The director stayed true both to himself and his fans. The reviews were positive. Roman Volobuev from “Afisha” wittily remarked, “For almost ten years Almodovar’s been working in the genre of unobtrusive tribute to himself.”

“In the Land of Blood and Honey” is set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War in the ‘90s. This bold new film illustrates the consequences of the lack of political will to intervene in a society stricken with conflict. “The film is specific to the Bosnian War, but it’s also universal,” says Jolie. “In the Land of Blood and Honey” features a completely local cast, most of whom were children of the war.

“The Skin I Live In” has been released in September while “In the Land of Blood and Honey” is to be released soon. The Golden Globe ceremony will take place on January 15.
